Welcome back to another Memorable Match from the Vancouver Canucks’ 2024–25 season. Last time, we looked at the team’s match against the New York Islanders on November 14. This week, we’ll take a look at the team’s record-breaking 5–4 overtime win against the Detroit Red Wings on December 1.

This Sunday morning matinee proved to be one of the more interesting games of the season due to quick lead changes and multiple records being broken. For starters, the game itself saw the Canucks surrender the opening goal in the first period, only to seize the lead for themselves within the first two minutes of the second frame. Despite a tying goal from Alex DeBrincat five minutes later, Vancouver escaped the second period with a 3–2 lead thanks to a late goal from Pius Suter 17:47 into the frame. Detroit grabbed two more goals in the third period to regain the lead, though a goal from Erik Brännström sent the game to overtime. Jake DeBrusk scored the game winner with a minute left in the extra frame, giving him his first hat trick as a member of the Canucks.

One franchise and one NHL record were also broken in this game. Canucks Captain Quinn Hughes tallied his 311th career assist off DeBrusk’s first power play goal of the game, setting a new club record for career assists by a defenceman. Every assist he tallies from then on will set a new record in the Canucks’ history books, and it’s possible they may never be broken again.

Vancouver’s 5–4 overtime victory also set a new NHL record. This win was goaltender Kevin Lankinen’s 10th consecutive road victory to start the 2024–25 season, which set a new record throughout the league. Before Lankinen’s 10th straight road win, Cam Talbot and Glenn Hall held the record with nine straight wins each.

All in all, this was definitely one of the Canucks’ most memorable matches of the season for more than one reason. Not only was the game itself exciting, but the records broken during it hold much more meaning for the franchise as a whole.

Canucks 2024–25 Memorable Matches will be posted every Tuesday until June 11.
