The Canucks 2022 first-rounder played in both games for the Abbotsford Canucks this past weekend.
After finishing up his SHL season on Mar. 18, Jonathan Lekkerimäki made his AHL debut with the Abbotsford Canucks this past weekend. The Vancouver Canucks top prospect played in both of Abbotsford's games against the Colorado Eagles, recording one shot while also seeing some time on the power play. He was initially credited with an assist in Friday's contest, but after further review, it was retracted by the AHL.
According to CanucksArmy's David Quadrelli, Lekkerimäki will only be with the Canucks for a few weeks before heading back to Sweden ahead of the World Championship. While Team Sweden has not yet announced their group, Lekkerimäki is projected to represent his country at the tournament for the first time. This year's World Championship is scheduled to take place in Czechia from May 11 to 26.
When asked about Lekkerimäki joining Abbotsford, head coach Rick Tocchet pointed out that it was a good chance for the prospect to learn the system. Tocchet said, "I think it's great, especially down there. Jeremy (Colliton) runs a great ship down there. Learning what we value and all that sort of stuff, I think it's big for him to be down there.
The AHL Canucks are back in action on Tuesday when they play a back-to-back in Abbotsford versus the Manitoba Moose. The Canucks currently hold down the seventh and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division and will be looking to qualify for their third straight postseason. If they do qualify, it will be the first time both the Vancouver Canucks and Abbotsford Canucks secure playoff berths in the same season.
