The San Jose Sharks have ‘essentially’ made their decision: Sam Dickinson is staying in the big league for the 2025-26 season.
Sheng Peng with SJ Hockey Now reported that Dickinson had a meeting with Sharks GM Mike Grier regarding his spot on the team.
The two-time OHL champion met with his GM before the team took on the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky had already told the 19-year-old that he would not suit up for the team in their tough matchup against the Avs.
However, based on the conversation he had with his GM, it would appear that San Jose wants to keep the talented blueliner with the team for the rest of the season instead of sending him back to the London Knights.
Dickinson played his 10th NHL game against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Of course, the Sharks could send him back to junior at any point, but they now would be burning a year off of his entry-level contract. The young man from Toronto, Ontario, came up clutch for the Sharks, scoring the game-tying goal late in the contest against Detroit, helping his team salvage a point in their 3-2 loss in a shootout.
Additionally, sending Dickinson back to London makes zero sense for his development.
The 6-foot-3 defender had been one of the best OHL defensemen for the past two seasons. Then he had a dominant 2024-25 campaign. Dickinson recorded 91 points (29 goals, 62 assists) and was a +64 (best in the league) in 55 regular season games. He was named the OHL and CHL Defensemen of the Year.
His dominance carried right over into the postseason. He led London in points by a defenseman with 31 (9 goals, 22 assists) in 17 games, en route to a second consecutive OHL Championship. Added another six assists and a 2025 Memorial Cup ring, Dickinson established himself as one of the best blueline prospects outside of the NHL.
