Zachary Spurgeon is the newest member of the Portland Winterhawks.
A familiar name may soon be hitting the ice in the WHL. The Portland Winterhawks announced that they have signed defenceman Zach Spurgeon to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. The name should sound familiar, as Zach is the son of current Minnesota Wild captain Jared Spurgeon.
Just like his dad, Zach is choosing the WHL route for his development. During his WHL career, Jared spent five years playing for the Spokane Chiefs, which included capturing the 2008 Memorial Cup. In 266 WHL games, Jared scored 37 goals while recording 170 points.
As for Zach, he spent last year with the Northstar Christian Academy 18U AAA team. In 23 games, he scored two goals and recorded seven points. This season, Spurgeon is playing in the BCHL with the Brooks Bandits.
