As the 2025 WHL regular season comes to a close, only one playoff spot remains unsecured. We already know the eight teams in the Eastern Conference, but in the Western Conference, there is still one spot that remains up for grabs. While three teams are mathematically still alive, it looks like that final berth will come down to the Seattle Thunderbirds and the Wenatchee Wild, who are currently separated by one point.
Based on the standings as of Thursday morning, the Thunderbirds are the favourites to secure the last spot. They have 55 points, but more importantly, they still have six games left on their schedule. The Wild, on the other hand, have 54 points but will need to win out as they are down to their final four games.
Let's say that these two teams are tied in points at the end of the season. Luckily, the WHL has an interesting rule for this scenario. Below is a look at the WHL's tie-breaking procedure for this season.
"In the event two Clubs are tied in points for the last playoff position, then these Clubs will play a sudden-death game in the home arena of the Club having won the most games in WHL standings. If the Clubs are tied in wins, section a) will be used to select the home site."
Yes, you read that right, we could see a one-game winner goes to the playoffs scenario this season. This would not be the first time this scenario played out, with the last occurrence being in 2019 when the Kamloops Blazers defeated the Kelowna Rockets to claim a spot in the postseason. Ultimately, a single-elimination tie-breaker would be an exciting end to the season and would be a great segue into what is expected to be an intriguing playoff.
The 2024-25 regular season is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, March 23. Seattle's final game is scheduled for the 22nd against the Portland Winterhawks. As for Wenatchee, they will take on the Everett Silvertips in their regular-season finale, which is also scheduled for the 22nd.
