The WHL is set to play a significant role in this year's 2024 NHL Draft. 57 players were included on NHL Central Scouting's final rankings, with a handful expected to be drafted in the first round. Today's draft profile is of Swift Current Broncos' Clarke Caswell, who enters the draft as the 77th-ranked North American Skater.

Caswell has developed into one of the top playmakers from WHL in this year's draft. In his second full season, he saw his assists total increase from 20 to 51 while also recording seven helpers during the Broncos' nine playoff games. Caswell also proved he can contribute to special teams, finishing the regular season with 18 power play assists and two shorthanded goals.

When it comes to Caswell, his most significant strength is his playmaking ability. He is always looking for open teammates and can deliver accurate cross-ice passes into scoring positions. Caswell also showed an ability to read the play by taking his time and letting his teammates get into scoring positions before hitting them with tape-to-tape passes.

In the transition game, Caswell often elects to pass the puck off to teammates rather than carry the puck himself. This happens when both exiting the defensive and entering the offensive zone. This is another area where Caswell's ability to read plays pays off, as he can often hit teammates in stride, which allows his linemates to enter the offensive zone with speed.

The next step in Caswell's development will be working on his shooting. While he can put the puck in the net, his shot could use a bit more work in order to become more effective. Caswell could also benefit from shooting the puck more, as he often elects to pass to teammates rather than take the shot himself.

As for the draft, Caswell is projected to go somewhere in the third round. His overall game is impressive, and if he can continue to develop, he has the potential to be a bottom-six forward at the NHL level. Fans of whatever organization drafts him should be excited, as Caswell should provide plenty of highlight reel moments during the 2024-25 campaign.
