The WHL is set to play a big role in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Leading up to the draft, we at The Hockey News will be profiling some of the players who are projected to hear their names called at the end of June. Today's prospect is center Matthew Gard, who plays for the Red Deer Rebels.

Ranked in the 45-65 range by the majority of scouting outlets, Gard has grown on quite a few people throughout the season. A much-needed bright spot on a rebuilding Rebels team, the Winnipeg product looks to show what he can bring to an NHL roster come June 27.

Described as a "toolsy, defence-first centre" by EliteProspects, Gard uses his high work ethic and size to work his way into corners and break opponents off the puck. While he was not a high scoring player-just 19 goals and 17 assists in 66 contests- Gard does have the tools to elevate his linemates offensively and set up high quality scoring chances, even if they don't always end up in the back of the net.

In the case of a future in pro hockey for the Red Deer forward, teams will be looking at what he can do to bring himself to the next level. While he is capable of playing a shutdown role and could more than likely lock down a bottom-six spot, the expectation is now there for Gard to step up and contribute a little more in his post-draft season.
