A look at four overagers making a difference in their final WHL season.
Overagers play a crucial role in the WHL. They are more mature physically than most of the younger players in the league and serve as role models in their final year of WHL action. With this in mind, here is a look at four overagers that may not get the spotlight but are making a difference for their teams this year.
Charlie Wright is a steady defender who is a vital member of the Saskatoon Blades blue line. He often plays over 25 minutes a night and is one of the best in the league when it comes to creating turnovers and winning board battles. A player who has worn an "A" for the last two seasons, he very well could end his WHL career with a trip to the Memorial Cup.
One of the reasons the Wenatchee Wild have had a successful first season is Briley Wood. He sits third on the team in points with 56 and is the only player currently on the roster with two hat tricks this season. A fan favourite, his playoff experience will be valuable as the Wild close in on their first playoff berth since moving to Wenatchee.
After a tough start to the season that saw him miss multiple weeks with an upper-body injury, Ty Nash is showing why he is such a valuable piece to the Edmonton Oil Kings lineup. He sits third on the team with 39 points and is one of three players who is over a point per game after 20 games played. On pace to set new career highs in goals, assists and points, he is leading by example and helping one of the league's youngest teams through their rebuild season.
Hudson Thornton has been fantastic for the Prince George Cougars this season. The captain ranks fifth on the team in points, with 58 through 56 games and averages over 23 minutes a night. He has been a critical part of the Cougars' success all year, which should parlay into a pro contract somewhere for the 2024-25 season.
