The Boston Bruins are keeping one of their prospects in their system, as forward Jake Schmaltz has signed a one-year American Hockey League (AHL) contract with the Providence Bruins. In addition, he has signed an amateur tryout with Providence for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

Schmaltz, 23, was selected by the Bruins with the 192nd overall pick of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-1 forward just completed his four-year collegiate career with the University of North Dakota this season.

In 38 games this season with North Dakota, Schmaltz posted six goals, 16 points, and a plus-2 rating. In 147 games over four seasons with the school, the McFarland, Wisconsin native had 20 goals, 43 assists, 63 points, and a plus-4 rating.

With the Bruins needing to improve their prospect pool, there is no harm in them taking a shot on Schmaltz with this AHL deal. If he performs well with Providence during his ELC, perhaps it could open the door for him to get an NHL deal with Boston in the future.
