The Boston Bruins may have a new approach with their star goalie.
We are now in September, but Boston Bruins star goalie Jeremy Swayman is still without a contract. With training camp now right around the corner, the Bruins must get the Anchorage, Alaska native signed as soon as possible.
With it now being so late into the offseason, The Boston Globe's Kevin Paul Dupont raised the prospect of the Original Six club using a different plan to complete Swayman's deal.
Dupont recently discussed the possibility of the Bruins and Swayman going with a bridge deal, rather than a long-term pact.
Here's what Dupont wrote on the matter:
"Given that the Bruins have yet to use Swayman as a full-time No. 1, they are looking to ink him to a bridge deal, one of maybe 3-4 years, scaled up from his $3.475 million of last season. The number could be, say, $22 million-$24 million if stretched to four years, at which point he then would be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at age 29."
For much of this offseason, the expectation was that the Bruins and Swayman would end up going with a long-term deal. While that certainly could still occur, the possibility of a bridge deal being brought up is rather interesting.
It will be fascinating to see what Swayman's contract ends up being from here.
