The Boston Bruins are entering this off-season with multiple players who have expired contracts. This includes goalie Michael DiPietro, as the 25-year-old is a pending group 6 unrestricted free agent.
With how well DiPietro played this season, the Bruins should at least try to re-sign him. In 40 games with the Providence Bruins, he posted a 26-8-5 record, a .927 save percentage, and a 2.05 goals-against average. This was good enough for him to win the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL's top goalie and to make the AHL's First All-Star Team.
After an incredible season like this, DiPietro has reportedly caught the attention of teams around the league. According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, several teams he has spoken with have been open about being interested in DiPietro.
It is not too surprising to hear that teams are interested in DiPietro after the season he just had. The 2017 third-round pick undoubtedly made a serious case for himself that he still has the potential to make the jump to the NHL level. In addition, the free-agent goalie market is weaker this offseason, so he could be a very popular target if he hits it on July 1.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what happens with DiPietro this summer. It would certainly sting to lose him, but time will tell if general manager Don Sweeney can get a new deal done with the promising netminder.
