The Boston Bruins should look to improve several areas on their roster this off-season. This is certainly the case for their forward group, but they should also focus on their blueline.
After trading Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the deadline, the Bruins' top four has a notable hole on their right side. Due to this, bringing in an impactful right-shot defenseman should be a top objective for the Bruins as they look to become a playoff team again.
When looking at potential trade targets, one who stands out big time is Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson.
Andersson, 28, has come up as a potential off-season trade candidate for the Flames. The right-shot blueliner is entering the final season of his current deal, and he could be made available if he is not open to a contract extension. It is no secret that the Flames are not afraid of moving their pending UFAs in these situations. For example, during the 2023-24 season alone, Calgary traded then-pending UFAs Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, and now-Bruins Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov.
If Andersson is officially made available, he would be an excellent player for the Bruins to target. This is because he is a very good top-four defenseman who provides offense from the point, can handle playing big minutes, and is well-known for his leadership qualities. He also has a reasonable $4.55 million cap hit.
If the Bruins acquired Andersson, he would give the Original Six club a strong one-two punch on their right side with Charlie McAvoy. Furthermore, he would also give their power play a much-needed boost, as he thrives on the man advantage.
Andersson appeared in 81 games this season with the Flames, posting 11 goals, 31 points, and 196 blocks. The 6-foot-1 blueliner also had 50 points in 2021-22 and 49 points in 2022-23, so he has the potential to be even more of an impactful offensive contributor on the backend in the right situation.
