The Boston Bruins should be looking to boost their forward group this off-season after a terrible 2024-25 season. The Original Six club is in a position to do some big spending, as they are entering the summer with plenty of cap space.
Due to this, let's look at four star pending unrestricted free agents who the Bruins could end up targeting if they hit the market on July 1.
Mitch Marner is the NHL's best free agent this off-season, and there is a real possibility that he won't be sticking around with the Toronto Maple Leafs. If he decides to test the market, he is certainly a player who the Bruins could consider making a real run for.
Marner is a legitimate superstar right in his prime who would give the Bruins' forward group a massive boost. In 81 games this season for the Maple Leafs, the 28-year-old scored 27 goals and set new career highs with 75 assists and 102 points. He has also produced at an over a point-per-game pace in each of the last seven seasons.. With all of this, Marner would be a game-changing addition to the Bruins' top six.
Yet, signing Marner would not leave the Bruins much room to bring in other talent to improve their roster. Naturally, the 2015 first-round pick is looking for a monster payday.
The Bruins need help at the right wing position, so a player like Brock Boeser could make a lot of sense for them. The 28-year-old forward would not cost nearly as much as Marner and would still provide the Bruins with a legitimate solution for their second-line right wing issue.
Boeser recorded 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games this past season with the Vancouver Canucks. He also had 40 goals and 73 points in 81 games with Vancouver in 2023-24, so he could be a major pickup for the Bruins if signed.
Nikolaj Ehlers is another star winger who could make a lot of sense for the Bruins to sign. At a minimum, the 29-year-old could slot in nicely on their second line and power play. Yet, with his high offensive skill, the left winger could thrive playing on the Bruins' first line with David Pastrnak.
Ehlers had another strong season in 2024-25 with the Winnipeg Jets, posting 24 goals, 63 points, and a plus-14 rating. He is a very consistent player, too, as he has had eight seasons with at least 20 goals. That kind of scoring would come in handy for the Bruins.
The Bruins need help at center, and Sam Bennett is the best one who can hit the free-agent market on July 1. While Bennett is a well-known Bruins villain, he would be a big center for Boston to land as they look to be competitive again.
Bennett, 28, would provide the Bruins with more skill and feistiness down in the middle, which is a major need. In 76 regular-season games this season with the Panthers, he recorded 25 goals, 51 points, and 145 hits. He is also dominating this post-season, as he leads the league with 10 goals and has recorded 16 points in 17 games.
