The 2024 NHL Trade Deadline is now one week away. As a result, we are slowly starting to see trades picking up. When it comes to the Buffalo Sabres, there has been speculation that they will not only move some of their pending UFAs but are also open to bringing in players that will help them beyond this season.

The Sabres need veterans with playoff experience and one trade target who would be a notable addition to their group because of it is Washington Capitals forward Nic Dowd.

Dowd, 33, has been picking up a lot of chatter in the rumor mill in recent weeks. While the Sabres have not officially entered the sweepstakes, they should be considering it. This is because he is a quality and versatile bottom-six forward who provides decent secondary offense, plays well defensively, and hits.

If the Sabres acquired Dowd, he would fit nicely on either their third line or fourth line. This is because he can play both down the middle and on the wing. Furthermore, he would be a significant addition to their penalty kill if acquired because of his strong defensive play.

Dowd also makes sense for the Sabres because he is under contract until the end of next season and carries an easily affordable $1.3 million cap hit. Thus, he would be more than a rental.

In 45 games this season, Dowd has eight goals, 16 points, 58 hits, and a plus-8 rating.
