The Sabres are in a position to make a big splash this offseason.
The 2023-24 season has been a rough one for the Buffalo Sabres. After just missing out on the playoffs in 2022-23, there was an expectation that they would finally break their postseason drought this campaign. Instead, they went in the opposite direction, and their playoff hopes are essentially crushed at this juncture.
After a deflating season, it's clear that the Sabres should look to make some changes to their roster over the summer. Due to this, in a recent article for the Bleacher Report, Adam Gretz listed the Sabres as among the 'best positioned' teams to make a blockbuster trade this offseason.
Gretz noted that the Sabres' long playoff drought is the big reason they should look to make a splash this summer. He also pointed out that Buffalo has cap space, draft capital, and several notable prospects that could allow the club to make a big-time deal.
The Sabres also could improve their roster just about anywhere. Bringing in a top-six forward with skill and bite should be on their wish list. A right-shot, top-four defenseman would also be excellent for them to add. Perhaps even landing a short-term but impactful starting goalie could be in the cards for them.
No matter the case, the Sabres are in a position to make a major move. It may be what's needed for them to finally take that next step in 2024-25.
