This Sabres trade target has made a notable move.
Leading up to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, the Buffalo Sabres were among the teams interested in New York Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko. Because of this and Kakko being in the rumor mill still, some have wondered if the Sabres will make a push for him again this offseason.
While Kakko has been creating plenty of chatter as a potential trade candidate, he has made a big decision. The 2019 second-overall pick has re-signed with the Rangers on a one-year, $2.4 million contract. This was exact amount of his qualifying offer.
Kakko, 23, will likely continue to create speculation about his future with the Rangers this summer. However, it is also intriguing that he has also come to terms on his new deal so early on in the offseason.
Kakko had a bit of a down season in 2023-24, posting 13 goals, 19 points, and a plus-6 rating in 61 regular-season contests. He then followed that up with just one goal, one assist, and a minus-4 rating in 15 playoff games.
When noting that Kakko is a former top prospect who has shown promise in previous seasons, there is reason to believe that he can still break out. We will need to wait and see if he can do just that on this latest deal from here.
