The Columbus Blue Jackets have had a shaky start to the 2025-26 season. They’ve played well at times but struggled in key moments, and that’s cost them games. After bouncing back against the Tampa Bay Lightning, though, the vibes are high in the dressing room again.
As the season goes on, there’s going to be plenty of news and rumors surrounding the team. With that, welcome to News From The Cannon City, where we’ll be covering all the news and rumors around the team. So, let’s get into it.
The Blue Jackets have recalled defenseman Dysin Mayo from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. Mayo, 29, was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
He didn’t make the NHL until the 2021-22 season, when he finally cracked the Coyotes lineup. Before that, he spent seven years in the AHL and ECHL, mainly with the Tucson Roadrunners. When he finally made the NHL, his time there was relatively short. He played 67 games with the Coyotes in 2021-22, scoring four goals and adding eight assists for 12 points. The following season, he appeared in 15 games but didn’t record a point.
Since then, he hasn’t returned to the NHL. He spent three seasons with the Henderson Silver Knights and, this year, started the season with the Monsters. The most notable moment in his career came when he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Shea Weber and a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. Unfortunately, his career hasn’t quite panned out the way many hoped. However, there’s still time for him to turn it around and become a reliable depth defenseman. That could happen with the Blue Jackets right now.
Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell spoke this weekend, and one of the topics he addressed was Miles Wood’s injury. Wood was hurt by a high stick from Dougie Hamilton in their game against the New Jersey Devils last week. When he went down, he was clearly in a lot of pain, with blood pouring from his face. At the time, no one knew the full extent of the injury or whether his eye had been hit.
Now we do. Waddell said Wood “was very lucky” and that the team doesn’t believe there’s any damage to the eye. He did mention that the medical team is waiting for the blood to clear from his eye before doing more testing. For now, it looks like he’ll be out week-to-week but managed to avoid a serious injury. It'll be interesting to see if he will return wearing a full-face shield, until his eye is 100% better.
Blue Jackets Stats Update Through 5 Games
The 2024-25 Blue Jackets season started like most seasons have - With losses. The NHL didn't do the Jackets any favors by starting them on the road against a team they flat-out cannot beat. Regardless of all that, the games must be played. So, let's take a quick look at the stats through the first 5 games of the season.
As you may have seen Friday night, my colleague Jason Newland covered the breaking news of Blue Jackets prospects Cayden Lindstrom and Jackson Smith scoring their first NCAA goals. It was awesome to see both players shine on the same night and get Blue Jackets fans even more excited about the future.
Lindstrom, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, is now a member of the Michigan State Spartans. He received a pass from teammate Gavin O’Connell and went five-hole to score his first NCAA goal.
As for Smith, he was the Blue Jackets’ 2025 first-round pick and plays for the Penn State Nittany Lions. His goal came on a point shot that found its way through traffic and in.
Both players represent the future of the organization, alongside Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson, Kirill Marchenko, and Zach Werenski.
It’ll be exciting to see how they perform this season. Hopefully, if all goes well, they can join the team at the end of the 2025-26 season and help in a playoff push. But first, the hope is that both teams can make a run to the Frozen Four — and maybe even bring home a national championship.
The Blue Jackets are back in action on Oct. 21 against the Dallas Stars, on the road. They’re looking to build a bit of a winning streak after beating the Lightning last night. After that, they’ll return home to host the Washington Capitals on Oct. 24 in the first half of a back-to-back. The second leg comes against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which could be an early-season statement game. If they can pick up wins against the Capitals and Penguins, it could move them into the top four in their division.
