EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers were not in action last night, but that doesn't mean they aren't paying attention to the games.

Last night there were only two games in the National Hockey League. The first one was Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins going against the Toronto Maple Leafs - and the other was the Vancouver Canucks playing the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Maple Leafs overcame the Penguins 3-2 in overtime, thanks to Jake McCabe. However the results for the other game should be of more interest to Oilers and Oilers fans.

Brock Boeser and Conor Garland led the way with a 4-3 regulation win against the Golden Knights. Boeser scored his 40th goal of the year, for the first time in his career. Garland scored two goals, one of which was the game winning tally with 1:29 left in regulation. In doing so, the Canucks managed to secure home ice advantage for the playoffs.

This doesn't mean that they have secured the division - rather, it means that they cannot finish lower than second in the Pacific. Both the Golden Knights and the Los Angeles Kings are too far behind in points to surpass the Canucks.

The Oilers on the other hand, have six games remaining and are five points back of the Canucks 104 points. Even if they fall to second in the division, they cannot be passed by the Kings - who are in third. They can still overtake the Canucks in the standings.
The Oilers play the Golden Knights tomorrow night. It will be their third and final meeting of the season - with the season series tied 1-1.
