The New Jersey Devils are expected to look to add to their roster this off-season. Their bottom six could use a makeover, and the Montreal Canadiens have two players who could be interesting potential targets for the Devils because of it. Let's discuss each player now.
Alex Newhook is a fascinating player who the Devils should consider pursuing. The Devils should be looking to upgrade their third-line center spot, and a player like Newhook could provide them with just that if acquired. He would also be more than a rental, as he has a $2.9 million cap hit until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Newhook, 24, is a former first-round pick who still has the potential to hit a new level. He appeared in 82 games this season with the Canadiens, where he had 15 goals and 26 points. However, he also had 34 points in 55 contests just back in 2023-24 with Montreal, so he can be a more impactful offensive contributor when playing at his best. Thus, the 2022 Stanley Cup winner could be worth trading for.
Joel Armia could be a player who grabs the attention of the Devils this summer if he hits the free-agent market on July 1. The 31-year-old winger is coming off a solid season in a bottom-six role with the Canadiens, posting 11 goals, 29 points, and 87 hits. With numbers like these, he would give the Devils' bottom six more secondary offensive production and grit.
Another appealing element of Armia's game is that he is known for his solid defensive play. Because of this, he would also offer the Devils another strong option for their penalty kill, which certainly would not be a bad thing.
