Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere couldn't provide an update on the status of top prospect Matvei Michkov.
In speaking with The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, Briere was honest about his knowledge of Michkov's status.
"We follow what's going on through the media mostly," Briere said. "There's some ups and downs there, back and forth, it seems. It just seems to change on a daily basis. We're hopeful. But at the same time, when we drafted him, we knew it would be three years."
Like every fan, coach, player, and media member, Danny Briere honestly doesn't know what's going on. While he likely knows more than most, conversations with Michkov's camp have been minimal. Michkov is still under contract in the KHL for another two years.
Keith Jones even said the plan was to have Michkov play out his contract, but if something changes, the team would welcome him.
Michkov's high-profile status brings more excitement whenever there is a slight rumor that he's on his way to North America. There was a report that he would transition to the NHL for the 2024-25 season.
Briere echoed Jones' expectation of three years after drafting him before he would transition to the U.S.
"That's kind of what I keep in the back of my mind. He's going to be away for three years before he can come over. If things change, I'll be ecstatic and we'd be really excited to welcome him," Briere said.
He continues to preach patience and reminds everyone that the internet is a crazy place.
"But I'm not trying to get caught up in the excitement of it for now. If it happens, it happens. We don't have any news at this moment as far as how reliable the sources are that are popping over the internet," Briere told LeBrun.
