Haley Taylor Simon THN - The Philadelphia Flyers Announce Partnership With The University Of Delaware's Women's Ice Hockey Team

The Philadelphia Flyers announced they will partner with the University of Delaware's Women's hockey team to grow the game. The Blue Hens' women's hockey team will be formally a varsity team in the 2025-2026 season. The announcement for this milestone for the team was made in late 2023. The team became the first NCAA Division 1 hockey program in Delaware. Looking across all women's programs, the Blue Hens become the 45th NCAA Division 1 Women's program.

Chrissi Rawak, the Director of Athletics, Community, and Campus Recreation, spoke alongside Keith Jones, the President of Hockey Operations for the Philadelphia Flyers, about the new partnership. Rawak stated in her press conference that she was excited for hockey to continue growing in Delaware, saying, "There is no doubt in my mind that this partnership will quickly put our program in a position to be successful." Rakak said the Flyers will have their annual summer Caravan by the Delaware beaches for the first time. The University of Delaware also talks with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey and Education Foundation.

Jones talked about his own experiences with being involved with women's hockey when calling a game in the Olympics. Jones explained how this will benefit both Philadelphia and the University of Delaware. Rawak's goal is to fill up their arena with more fans and get the university students more involved with women's hockey. Rakak explained, "We want to win, but make it a significant experience for our student-athletes and the University of Delaware."

The Former Penn State Women's Ice Hockey coach, Allison Coomey, will be the first head coach for the University of Delaware's women's hockey team. Coomey formerly played ice hockey for Niagra University from 1998-2002. After Coomey's playing days, she began coaching from 2002 to now. She has been involved with women's ice hockey for years and is the right coach to start this journey for the University of Delaware. Coomey was honored as she made the ceremonial puck drop leading up to the start of the game.
