The GM search continues for the Pittsburgh Penguins as new names appear in the interview process.
With May of 2023 in full swing, it seems as though Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and the Pittsburgh Penguins are nearing the final stages of their search for new faces in the front office.
FSG relieved Ron Hextall, Brian Burke, and Chris Pryor of their duties on the first day of the Penguins offseason and have been searching for replacements ever since.
For a little over a month, names have been tossed as possibilities, and rumors have been spread far and wide.
According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and the Athletic, the Penguins have wrapped their first round of interviews and were talking with 10-12 people.
Among those interviewed were Marc Bergevin, Eric Tulsky, Jason Karmanos, and Peter Chiarelli.
Bergevin is a name that’s been popped around before and Karmanos was always a sleeper in the running.
Ever since the start of the search, Tulsky has been one of the fan favorite choices, and hearing he’s been interviewed is a step in the right direction.
Currently the assistant general manager with the Carolina Hurricanes, Tulsky has helped build one of the most well-rounded teams in the NHL.
The Hurricanes punched their ticket for the Eastern Conference Final, and are playing above and beyond while missing multiple huge pieces of their lineup.
Tulsky makes much more sense and would be a better option than Chiarelli who is seeing his name appear in the Penguins’ search for the first time.
Chiarelli was previously a GM for the Edmonton Oilers while they looked to build around Connor McDavid.
Since 2021, Chiarelli has worked in the St. Louis Blues front office as vice president of hockey operations.
It’s not clear who has received a second interview, but the list of names the Penguins have their eyes on continues to grow.
