The Sharks had been shopping Kahkonen, and now they have found a trade partner. GM Mike Grier traded for Mackenzie Blackwood during the offseason.
Vanecek has struggled this season. In 32 games, he has 17 wins, a .890 save %, and a 3.18 GAA.
Vanecek has played for the Washington Capitals and the New Jersey Devils. The Seattle Kraken also selected him during the expansion draft, but the Capitals quickly re-acquired him. He is signed through next season with a $3.4 million cap hit.
Kahkonen's numbers aren't much better, but the Sharks are in a worse position. Kahkonen has a .895 save % and a 3.81 GAA. San Jose also received a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Devils.
San Jose announced via email that they also acquired Los Gatos native Devin Cooley from the Buffalo Sabres. Colley has a 6-6-2 record with a 3.77 GAA and .891 save % this season with the Rochester Americans. Cooley played for the Junior Sharks minor hockey program.
San Jose traded the Washington Capitals 7th-round pick in return for Cooley.
