San Jose Sharks top prospect Will Smith joined the NHL club by signing his entry-level contract today.
Smith played for Boston College for one season in the NCAA and now takes his talent to professional hockey. The 2023 fourth-overall pick shared his excitement with reporters.
"I think with all the draft picks and already guys who are drafted, it could be a pretty fun and special future," Smith said. "[We are] trying to get back to winning more games. The crowds and fans there seem awesome, so I can't wait."
Smith told reporters he wanted to wear No. 2 because of former New York Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch.
"I grew up a BC fan and Brian Leetch was there," Smith said. "Even though he's a defenseman, I still like the number and I've worn it my whole life."
Smith told reporters that he wanted to decide on his future before he left for the 2024 IIHF World Championship. By signing his ELC, Smith is no longer eligible to play in the NCAA.
With the Sharks landing the No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft, Smith was showered with questions about possibly playing with Macklin Celebrini. He competed against Celebrini four times this season, as Celebrini played for BC's biggest rival, Boston University.
"It would be pretty cool to play together. I think we'd be pretty pretty cool to watch together," Smith said about Celebrini. "I think he's got some got some pretty sick skills. I think going up against him was always going to be a tough battle."
During his exit interview, GM Mike Grier told reporters that he felt Smith was ready for the NHL. Now, with a contract signed, that vision can become reality. Smith's goal is to make the Sharks right out of training camp.
"[Grier] was great [during the] whole process. We started talking after the year ended, and then, obviously, I took some time to make sure I was making the right decision. I mean, every single factor that was going into it, he made sure to lay it on the table which was awesome for me and my family," Smith explained. "It's going to start with Summer training. Once I get to camp it is just going to continue from there. The goal is to make the team."
Smith will join a rebuilding Sharks team still looking for its new head coach. Given the state of the roster, should Smith make the team, he should be given ample opportunity for top minutes.
