Per Pierre LeBrun, the San Jose Sharks have asked for and received permission from the L.A. Kings to speak with Marco Sturm for their vacant head coaching position.
Sturm is the head coach for the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. This season, the Reign finished third in the Pacific Division with a record of 42-23-3-4. However, the Coachella Valley Firebirds knocked them out of the Calder Cup playoffs.
Sturm has been the head coach of the Reign for the last two seasons. He was also an assistant coach with the NHL club from 2019-2022 and the head coach of Germany's national team for the 2015 and 2016 IIHF World Championships.
Sturm played for the Sharks for eight seasons (553 GP) but was eventually traded to the Boston Bruins in the Joe Thornton deal.
Sportsnet's Jeff Marek had a theory that Sturm could be on the Sharks' radar for head coach, but nothing was confirmed at the time. Sturm now joins the list of possible head coaches for the Sharks.
