The San Jose Sharks just completed a trade that sent winger Anthony Duclair to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Mike Grier got defenseman Jack Thompson and a 2024 third-round pick in return.

Duclair Trade Grade: B

I give the return a B, but it shouldn't be a knock at Mike Grier. After the All-Star break, Duclair found his game, which had been absent for the entire season. Duclair had seven goals in nine games.

This season's trade market was heavily weighted towards selling teams. There were more sellers than buyers. Teams like the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets went big during the break, acquiring two of the marquee names in Elias Lindholm and Sean Monahan.

Things changed even more when the Pittsburgh Penguins put Jake Guentzel on the market. When there were reports that the Penguins would trade him, Guentzel became the top winger on the trade market.

Getting a third-round pick for the 2024 draft allows the Sharks to add more young players sooner. Grier might've been able to obtain a 2025 second-round pick, but that is just my thought.

On paper, Jack Thompson seems like a decent offensive defenseman. The 21-year-old has 32 points in 46 games in the AHL this season. Thompson was a third-round pick in 2020.

Thompson will likely stay in the AHL and provide the Barracuda with backend support. This addition will probably soften the blow of losing Leon Gawanke on the blue line. Thompson made his NHL debut this season but only played one game.

Alexander Barabanov is likely the next player to be dealt from the Sharks as he sits out tonight's game against the New York Islanders for trade-related reasons.
