Todd signed a two-year contract during the 2023 offseason and never played a game in the NHL. He was the San Jose Barracuda's leading scorer last season with 55 points (19 goals, 36 assists).
Sharks assistant general manager Joe Will provided a comment on the situation.
"Nathan has informed us that he intends to play in Russia next season. We have granted his release & terminated his contract for next season. We want to thank Nate for his efforts last year & we wish him nothing but the best in the future," Will said.
The 29-year-old hasn't appeared in the NHL and went undrafted. Todd becomes the second player from the 'Cuda to terminate his contract during the 23-24 season after defenseman Leon Gawanke.
The 'Cuda were one of the youngest teams in the AHL last season, and losing a veteran scorer like Todd could be a massive loss for head coach John McCarthy. With Filip Bystedt joining the team late in the regular season, San Jose will have a replacement but must find some veterans to play with the talented prospects.
