According to Arthur Staple of The Athletic, the former head coach of the San Jose Sharks is joining the Pittsburgh Penguins as an assistant coach.

Quinn and Mike Sullivan have a long history together. Both attended Boston University and played on the same team. Their friendship is well documented, and they have often faced each other as coaches in the NHL.

Quinn has been fired as a head coach in the NHL twice since he got his first gig with the New York Rangers, and Sullivan hasn't lost his job since being hired by the Penguins in 2015. The two haven't been together behind the same bench in the NHL.

Quinn will be reunited with Erik Karlsson. Karlsson won his third career Norris Trophy during Quinn's first season in San Jose and became just the fourth defenseman in NHL history to score at least 100 points in a season.

The Penguins' powerplay was abysmal last season at 15.3%, which ranked 30th in the NHL. San Jose's powerplay was formidable despite the lack of talent under Quinn's watch, so maybe he can help improve that in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins fired Todd Reirden from Sullivan's staff this offseason. Reirden was in charge of the powerplay.

The Penguins haven't officially announced anything regarding David Quinn joining the staff.
