Eventually, they will need to add players to insulate their young core and stop trading players. Before they do, they should strongly consider trading defenceman Mario Ferraro.
Ferraro, 26, has been a staple on their backend for the last few years. However, if they are looking to go in a different direction, they may be able to trade him and get a decent return.
With him only being 26, they could consider keeping him because he can grow with the team and be a veteran in the locker room. But at this point in their rebuild, they should continue to put the right pieces in place to better the future of the organization.
Ferraro is entering the last year of his deal that carries an AAV of $3.25 million. That is a very tradable contract, and if they don't see him as a mainstay in their lineup going forward, they can easily deal him with only one year left on his deal.
The organization could easily fetch another defenceman who could grow with their group, along with a draft pick, in return for Ferraro. Teams like the Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, and Edmonton Oilers are clubs that could be in the mix for him.
There are also some pending free agents that they could sign, if they deal Ferraro this off-season, to replace him. It could be beneficial to the organization if they bring in more experienced veterans as they take another step forward in their rebuild.
