"After fourteen years, it's time for me to hang up the pads," Bernier said in an Instagram post.
"I can't thank the L.A. Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils enough for giving me the opportunity to play in the best league in the world and in front of the best fans in the game.
"There are no words to express my gratitude to everyone who has been part of my hockey journey since day one, without all of you I couldn't have done it.
"To my lovely wife, kids and family, thank you for always being by my side through the ups and downs. You have always supported me and helped me achieve my childhood dream and be my biggest fans.
"Now I'm heading into the next chapter of life - retirement."
Bernier spent three seasons with the Maple Leafs, appearing in 151 games and putting up a 59-68-17 record and a .915 save percentage. Over the span of his entire career, the 35-year-old had a 165-163-40 record and a .912 save percentage.
There are a lot of moments that Maple Leafs fans will remember about Bernier, but none more than his preseason fight with then Buffalo Sabre, Ryan Miller.
Back in 2009, before Bernier became a regular goaltender at the NHL level, he put up incredible numbers with the AHL's Manchester Monarchs.
His .936 save percentage through 56 games during 2009-10 remains one of the most impressive seasons for an AHL goaltender to date.
