A look at some of the analytics from the Canucks 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames

While Vancouver was outshot, this was a dominating performance from an analytics perspective. The Canucks held a 30-20 even-strength scoring chances advantage and won the even-strength high-danger scoring chances battle 17-5. As they have all season, Vancouver was able to build up an early lead and were able to handle whatever Calgary threw at them as they captured the Pacific Division crown for the first time in franchise history.

While the Flames were able to fill the heatmap, it is important to note that the Canucks did a great job of protecting the middle of the ice. They also made life easy for Thatcher Demko as he stopped all six high-danger shots he faced on the night. From a defensive perspective, it was almost a clean game from Vancouver, with the only blemish being a screen that found its way through multiple bodies midway through the third.

As for a line that impressed, Nils Höglander, Elias Pettersson and Ilya Mikheyev showed how effective they can be as a trio. The line scored what ended up being the game-winner and held a 7-0 scoring chances advantage in 8:04 of ice time together. It felt as though the trio was able to generate a scoring chance every time they were out there, as they spent the majority of their time in the offensive end.

Lastly, Tyler Myers had a fantastic game from the blue line. When the ice, the Canucks outscored the Flames 3-0 as he finished the night with a shorthanded goal and an assist. As for even-strength play, Vancouver held an 8-1 high-danger chances advantage in the 16:01 he was on the ice for. Myers continues to show just how valuable he can be to this lineup and should play a massive factor for the Canucks once the postseason begins.
