BREAKING: Canucks Sign Filip Hronek To Eight-Year Extension

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Filip Hronek to an eight-year contract extension worth $58 million.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Filip Hronek to an eight-year contract extension worth $58 million.

GM Patrik Allvin announced Tuesday that the Vancouver Canucks have signed Filip Hronek to an eight-year contract extension. The deal will pay Hronek $58 million and will carry a cap hit of $7.25 million. With the contract extension, Hronek is now signed by the Canucks through the 2031-32 season and carries the fourth-largest cap hit on the team. Hronek's extension also carries a no-move clause that changes into a 15-team no-trade clause on July 1, 2028.

During the 2023-24 campaign, Hronek showed that he could be a consistent top-pair defenceman. He averaged over 23 minutes a game and set a new career-high with 48 points. Hronek also showed excellent chemistry with Quinn Hughes, as the duo recorded the third most five-on-five ice time during the regular season, according to Natural Stat Trick.

In a statement released by the team, Allvin wrote, "Filip has fit in seamlessly on our blueline, giving us stability and strength on the right side. His ability to skate, defend and create offence is exactly what you want from a top pairing defenceman. This season he has shown all of us his desire to compete and a willingness to be a leader on this hockey team. We look forward to seeing him continue to help elevate our group and for him to grow both on and off the ice."

Vancouver acquired Hronek at the 2023 trade deadline from the Detroit Red Wings. The 26-year-old right-shot defenceman has 390 games of NHL experience under his belt and helped the Canucks capture their first Pacific Division title in franchise history this season. Initially drafted in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft, this was the first year Hronek participated in the postseason, where he averaged 21:02 of ice time while finishing with 25 hits and 15 blocked shots.
