According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks could attempt to acquire Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas during the offseason.

"I got a call this morning. I think there is something to this, and I am sure they aren't the only ones, but I think there is something to Vancouver," Friedman said.

Necas is set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and with the Hurricanes cap situation, he might be the odd man out. While the Canucks have their own in-house free-agent decisions to make, Friedman does reference what GM Patrik Allivin said during his exit interview.

"I think the Canucks like the player. I think Carolina is going to have some options here. You heard Patrik Allvin yesterday talking about what they were looking at," Friedman said. "Necas, from a pure hockey point of view, forgetting the contract for a second because Vancouver has some hoops to jump through, [but] I can see that fit. I think it is something that the Canucks are at least looking at."

The Czech forward scored 53 points in 77 games this season, but he had a career-high of 71 points the season before. The 25-year-old has recently garnered a lot of attention due to the Hurricanes' exit from the postseason.

Hurricanes GM Don Waddell stepped down this morning, and speculation of what moves could be made could be heightened because of it.

The Canucks will need to make some cap space to trade and sign a player like Necas. He would fit the need of a bonified top-six forward that Vancouver desperately needs.
