Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko was injured at the end of Game 1 and is week to week, according to Rick Tocchet.
The news surrounding Thatcher Demko is not good. According to multiple reports, including Don Taylor from "Donnie and Dhali," the Vancouver Canucks goaltender may have torn his ACL in Game 1. When asked, Rick Tocchet wouldn't go into detail about the injury but did say after Game 2 that Demko would be week to week.
If the injury is a torn ACL, it is hard to see a scenario where Demko returns this playoff run. The injury requires surgery to fully heal, with the estimated recovery timeline being 6-8 months. Rushing a player back or not electing to have the surgery could cause issues not just in the short term but also in the long term, as ACL injuries limit the bending and straightening of the knee.
With information at a premium in the playoffs, the exact injury information may not come out until the offseason. Between now and then, there will be a lot of speculation, especially if the Canucks can go on a long playoff run and he does not return.
While Demko being out is not for the postseason is not ideal, the organization must now move forward with Casey DeSmith and hope that he can put together a playoff run like Matt Murray in 2016 or Adin Hill last season.
