Within the first few days of the 2025 free agency period, one thing about the Jets was clear — their target was increasing their depth. Players such as Gustav Nyquist, Walker Duehr, and Kale Clague signed with Winnipeg, as did former Canucks Tanner Pearson and Phil Di Giuseppe. The biggest name that the Jets added in free agency was three-time Stanley Cup champion and Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who will be making his return to the NHL after a two-year hiatus. Winnipeg’s biggest losses were at forward, as Nikolaj Ehlers and Mason Appleton both decided to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings respectively.

The most intriguing thing about Winnipeg coming into the 2025–26 season is the addition of Toews. While the center has undoubtedly made an impact in previous seasons, he is also much older and has dealt with long COVID-19, which could make staying properly conditioned difficult. Another thing to keep in mind is the fate of captain Adam Lowry, who is expected to miss a good chunk of the season due to injury.
Vancouver will face Winnipeg three times throughout the 2025–26 season, with their first match being on November 11. Winnipeg will also be Vancouver’s first opponent after the 2026 Winter Olympics break in February. As always, the stellar play of three-time Vezina Trophy winner and last year’s Hart Memorial Trophy winner Hellebuyck will be hard to crack. However, the Canucks have shown they can do that. Winnipeg is a great regular season team, which is something that’s likely to continue throughout 2025–26, though they do have some noticeable gaps within their forward core. Whether Toews can be a second-line center or not is something that has yet to be determined — and could be something for the Canucks to keep an eye on once their games roll around.
