Victor Olofsson could be a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Vancouver Canucks.

With free agency just a few weeks away, the Vancouver Canucks will need to find some cheap options that can make an impact on the 2024-25 roster. One of those options could be former Buffalo Sabres forward Victor Olofsson, who is expected to hit the market on July 1.

While Olofsson had a down year with only 15 points in 51 games, he is a dynamic, offensive-minded player who can help out on the penalty kill. He has surpassed the 40-point mark in two of the last three seasons and is a season removed from a 28-goal campaign. A former seventh-round pick from the 2014 draft, he can play both wings and has proven in the past that he has no problem generating shots and scoring chances.

The biggest question when it comes to Oloffson is his commitment to the defensive side of the game. Historically, this has been a weak spot and is an area he would need to improve in order to fit into Rick Tocchet's system. That being said, being put with defensively sound linemates could help the soon-to-be 29-year-old Swedish winger improve to the point he no longer becomes a liability in the defensive zone.

As mentioned, Oloffson had a tough year in Buffalo. In an interview with expressen.se, Ofoffson shared his frustration with what he called a "disappointing season" while also saying, "I think I have the qualities to be able to contribute to an NHL team." He is projected to sign a one-year deal at just over a million dollars; according to AFP Analytics, he could be a bounce-back candidate as he looks to show the rest of the NHL the 2023-24 season was a one-year blip.

From a Canucks perspective, this could be a great opportunity. In Olofsson, you have a motivated, skilled player who could be a cheap addition to the lineup while also outperforming his contract. There is also little risk, as if the sides agree to a one-year deal; the two parties could part at the end of the 2024-25 campaign if it doesn't work out. Ultimately, Olofsson could be the missing piece Patrik Allvin is looking for, and if he improves on the defensive side, he could fit in nicely next season next to Elias Pettersson.
