Welcome to this edition of THN's Vancouver Canucks 2024-25 Report Card. This recurring 2025 off-season series features a deep dive into how each Canucks player performed last year. Today's article will focus on winger Kiefer Sherwood, who finished the season with 40 points in 78 games.

To say Sherwood made an impact in his first season with the organization would be an understatement. The 30-year-old became one of the heartbeats of the team, while posting career highs in goals, assists and points. A physical force every time he stepped on the ice, Sherwood was one of Vancouver's most consistent players from start to finish.

Sherwood took hitting to another level in 2024-25, as he set the NHL record with 462 hits. He recorded at least double-digit hits on 10 separate occasions, while his 12 hits in a game tied Luke Schenn for the most by a player in franchise history. Regardless of where he was on the ice, Sherwood took every opportunity to finish his check, which is why he finished with 156 more hits than Columbus Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier, who finished second this season.

As the year progressed, Sherwood showed that he can be a reliable middle-six forward who contributes to both the penalty kill and power play. There were even times when he featured on the top line, as he played over 120 minutes in a trio with Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk. Sherwood also demonstrated his versatility throughout the year, as he was able to impact the game regardless of which line he played on.

One of the more impressive areas of Sherwood's game was his work in the defensive zone. He defended against the rush well, while his constantly active stick effectively closed off shooting and passing lanes. In fact, Sherwood's shorthanded goal this season was created by his active stick, as he was able to break up a pass from Nathan MacKinnon at the blue line before scoring on a breakaway

Not only did he set new career highs in goals, assists and points, but he also set the NHL record for hits in a season with 462. The record was initially held by Nashville Predators defenceman Jeremy Lauzon, who threw 383 during the 2023-24 season. <br>

Sherwood also had decent analytics this past season. He finished the year with an Expected Goals For Percentage of 47.83 at five-on-five, while his Wins Above Replacement of 1.5 was tied for fifth on the team. Ultimately, Sherwood was able to adapt to whatever role he was assigned, resulting in a career year in almost every statistical category.

There were few players who brought more value to their team than Sherwood. As mentioned, he set an NHL record and was one of the hardest-working players on a nightly basis. In the end, Sherwood receives an A- letter grade for the 2024-25 season.
