Former Vegas Golden Knights Reilly Smith could be a possible trade target for the team as they approach the trade deadline.
Smith was traded during the offseason to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a third-round pick as a cap casualty. The team decided to resign deadline acquisition Ivan Barbashev to a five-year $25M contract.
Before being traded, Smith was one of the six remaining Golden Knights from their first-ever season. With all the injuries the Golden Knights are facing and the Penguins falling farther out of a playoff spot, a possible reunion could be in place.
Smith is 32 years old and has 10 goals and 24 points in 49 games. Smith had his second-highest point total season and his highest goal total in his career last year with the Golden Knights. Smith also added four goals and 14 points in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Smith has a $5M cap hit with another year after this season. The Golden Knights have been linked to another Penguins player in Jake Guentzel. The Golden Knights currently have the cap space to acquire both players with Jack Eichel on the LTIR and possibly Mark Stone but if both players are healthy before the start of the postseason the Golden Knights would be over the cap limit. The Golden Knights may have to pay extra to the Penguins for them to retain some of Guentzel's salary if they choose to acquire both.
