Greg Wyshynski of ESPN has been ranking players by position by combining surveys from both players and executives and listed Vegas Golden Knights' Jack Eichel as the ninth-best centremen in the NHL.
Eichel is the first Golden Knight to appear in the top 10 of any position. The eight players ahead of Eichel were Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby, Leon Draisaitl, Aleksander Barkov, Jack Hughes and Brayden Point. Elias Pettersson was ranked tenth.
Eichel appeared on 10 ballots, including six of 10 players'. One NHL coach had him second overall on his ballot behind McDavid.
The Golden Knights forward has been injured for the last 16 games but before getting surgery on his knee, Eichel had 19 goals and 44 points in 42 games. A lot of praise was given to Eichel's two-way ability. Many fans and analysts saw how strong his defensive game was in the playoffs last season and have been impressed by the continued growth this season.
The Golden Knights are missing their franchise centre at the moment as goals have been hard to come by. General Manager Kelly McCrimmon recently stated that Eichel is getting closer to returning. This would be huge for a Vegas team that are trying to ensure that they make the playoffs.
