Terik Parascak and Gavin McKenna are separated by just two points with 11 games to go.
As the WHL season comes to a close, one race that is heating up is for the rookie scoring lead. With 11 games to go, it has become a two-horse race with Terik Parascak and Gavin McKenna leading third place Carter Bear by 30 points. Here is a look at their seasons so far and which player may have the edge coming into the final month of the 2023-24 campaign,
Terik Parascak- 57 GP, 34 G, 49, A, 83 P
Terik Parascak is having the best season by a rookie in Prince Cougars history. He smashed Brett Connolly's record of 60 points and could join teammates Zac Funk and Riley Heidt in the 100-point club this season.
The 2024 NHL Draft prospect has been on a tear recently, with 17 points in his last ten games. He has goals in each of his previous three games and has failed to hit the scoresheet just once in his last 14 games. With multiple games against the Kamloops Blazers still on the schedule, expect his totals to continue to rise as the Cougars inch closer to claiming the B.C. Division title.
Gavin McKenna- 51 GP, 28 G, 53 A, 81 P
At 16 years old, Gavin McKenna is having a season to remember. While he won't set the Medicine Hat Tigers record for most points by a rookie (141 by Don Murdoch in 1974-75), he could become just the fifth player in WHL history to record 100 points in their U17 season.
Like Parascak, McKenna has been lighting up the WHL as of late. He has 18 points in his last ten games, which includes a hat trick against the Edmonton Oil Kings. While he has a tough schedule, including matchups against the Saskatoon Blades and Lethbridge Hurricanes, he should have no problem continuing to rack up the points for the rest of the season.
