A deep dive into the Calgary Flames' WHL prospect pool
Welcome to this edition of the 2026 WHL Prospect Pools. Throughout the 2026 off-season, we will be looking at current or recently graduated WHLers who have been drafted or signed by NHL clubs. Today's organization is the Calgary Flames.
Since taking the helm, Calgary Flames General Manager Craig Conroy has made it abundantly clear that the Western Hockey League is a primary hunting ground for the organization's rebuild.
During the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, Calgary doubled down on this strategy, adding four more WHL-bound or WHL-based players to their system. They join Cole Reschny, Andrew Basha, Hunter Laing, and Axel Hurtig, who were the players the Flames selected in previous drafts.
Drafted 6th overall in 2026, Carels is the crown jewel of the Flames' blue line pipeline. Listed at 6'2" and 194 lbs, the elite two-way defenseman exploded offensively last season, posting 73 points in 58 games for the Prince George Cougars while routinely playing upwards of 25 minutes a night.
Harrington brings a heavy, power-forward element to the prospect pool. The Spokane Chiefs winger excels at winning wall battles, extending offensive zone cycles, and driving the net.
In one of the most incredible storylines of the 2026 draft, the Flames selected Joe Iginla in the third round (65th overall). The driven right winger split his draft year between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Vancouver Giants, registering 31 points in 59 games.
Drafted in the sixth round (164th overall), Laylin is set to make his highly anticipated WHL debut this season with the Everett Silvertips. The right-shot defenseman spent last season in the USHL with the Tri-City Storm, putting up a breakout 38 points in 55 games.
