The Moose Jaw Warriors captain recorded his 200th point via a goal against the Portland Winterhawks.
Denton Mateychuk hit another milestone Wednesday, becoming the 56th defenceman in WHL history to record 200 career points. The milestone moment came in their game against the Portland Winterhawks when he scored his 15th of the season early in the third. One of four defencemen over the past decade to join the 200-point club, Mateychuk could move into the top 40 all-time if he continues his current pace this season.
While he will likely not catch Luca Cagnoni or Graham Sward for the highest point total among defencemen this year, Mateychuk should be in the conversation for the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy. In 43 games this season, the Warriors captain has 60 points and pulled off a 23-game point streak earlier this season. He also played a massive role for Team Canada at the World Juniors and was named one of the top three Canadian players of the tournament.
As his WHL career winds down, Mateychuk also has a chance to set a Moose Jaw record this season. If he can record 13 points over the last ten games of the year, he will break the Warriors' record for career points by a defenceman. The record of 212 is currently held by Nathan Paetsch, who was also a Columbus Blue Jacket like Mateychuk at one point. Based on the team's schedule and how he has played this year, it is a safe bet to assume he will be the all-time leader by the end of the season.
