On April 1, the Boston Bruins signed Dans Locmelis to a three-year entry-level contract that will kick in next season. While Locmelis' ELC does not start until the 2025-26 campaign, the young forward also signed an amateur tryout with the Providence Bruins to play the rest of this campaign with them.
After signing his ATO with Providence, Locmelis made his debut for the AHL squad on April 4 against the Charlotte Checkers. It is fair to say that Locmelis did not disappoint, as he made an immediate impact in Providence's 4-0 win.
Just 1:59 into the first period, Locmelis recorded his first AHL point by picking up the primary assist on Riley Duran's game-opening goal.
Locmelis' assist was a well-earned one, too. The exciting prospect retrieved the puck in an offensive zone battle and confidently skated it around the net. From there, he fired the puck in front to Duran, and the latter put it home.
Locmelis demonstrated great forechecking, stickhandling, and playmaking to lead to Duran's goal. The 21-year-old forward did not look out of place in his first AHL game, and it will be exciting to see how he builds off of it from here.
In 40 games this season with UMass, Locmelis posted eight goals, 25 assists, 33 points, and a plus-16 rating. With numbers like these, he certainly has good upside and is easily considered one of the Bruins' top prospects.
