The Boston Bruins made a big move earlier this offseason, trading star goalie Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators. With Ullmark entering the final season of his deal and fellow star Jeremy Swayman viewed as the club’s long-term answer between the pipes, it is understandable that they opted to move him.
However, that does not mean the Bruins won't miss Ullmark next season.
A significant reason for the Bruins’ success over the last few seasons was because of the Ullmark/Swayman tandem. With it, opponents had to face a star goalie every time they matched up against the Bruins, which naturally made them a difficult team to beat. However, with Ullmark now gone, the Bruins have lost that luxury.
Linus Ullmark & Jeremy SwaymanThere is some optimism regarding the prospect of Bruins newcomer Joonas Korpisalo bouncing back in Boston, but expecting him to perform at Ullmark’s level is just unrealistic. Remember, Ullmark had a .915 save percentage or better in all three years as a Bruin. In addition, he notably won the Vezina Trophy in 2023 after posting a 40-6-1 record, a .938 SV%, and a 1.89 GAA.
At the end of the day, no longer having Ullmark will be a big adjustment for the Bruins to make. It will be fascinating to see how Swayman responds to being the club’s true No. 1 starter with Ullmark gone. The Bruins, of course, still need to get him signed before he can officially take on the responsibility.
