After a brief tenure as a rental for the Boston Bruins last season, Garnet Hathaway signed a two-year, $4.75 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers this past offseason. Fast-forward to today and the Flyers are surely happy about this move. This is because Hathaway has emerged as a key part of the club's roster.
Hathaway, 32, has seven goals and 15 points in 77 games with the Flyers this season. While he has not dominated the scoresheet, his value has come from his immense physicality and toughness. The veteran forward currently is second in the NHL with 310 hits and 130 penalty minutes. He has given them a much-needed, old-fashioned Flyer, and the fit could not be better.
Garnet Hathaway Hathaway's overall NHL experience has also made him a solid part of the Flyers' roster. With the Flyers rebuilding, they have plenty of young players, so Hathaway has been a good veteran to have around to mentor them. This is especially important for the Flyers at this juncture of the season, as they are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Overall, Hathaway has given the Flyers precisely what they had hoped for so far this campaign. There's no question that the Bruins could have used an agitator like him in their lineup right now, but it's good to see that he's found a great role for himself in Philly.
