The Buffalo Sabres must address a major need this offseason: the third-line center position. With the Atlantic Division club looking to end their 13-year playoff drought in 2024-25, there's no question that they need to improve down the middle.

At the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, the Sabres were linked to centers because of this. Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Laughton was rumored to be their top target, but a move did not come to fruition.

Now, with the offseason here for Buffalo, the chatter surrounding the Sabres potentially making a push for Laughton again is starting to pick up.

In a recent article for The Fourth Period, Anthony Di Marco discussed the prospect of the Sabres and Flyers striking a deal involving Laughton this offseason. Di Marco wondered if the Flyers would trade Laughton and their first-round pick from the Florida Panthers in exchange for the Sabres' 11th overall pick because the Flyers want to move up.

It is crucial to note that this does not mean the Sabres and Flyers are now discussing a Laughton trade. However, given their past interest in him, there's no question that they could look to bring him in this summer.

If acquired, Laughton would provide the Sabres with a major boost down the middle. This is because he is not only a solid offensive contributor but also very impactful with his physicality, defensive play, and leadership.

In 82 games this season with the Flyers, Laughton had 13 goals, 39 points, and 155 hits.
