Some people say that good help is hard to find.

Good help in the playoffs can be even harder for NHL teams.

The Dallas Stars have had their fair share of excellent players over the years. Ed Belfour, Mike Madano, Brett Hull, and Sergei Zubov have all donned the Stars’ jersey and performed at an elite level.

One former Stars defender, John Klingberg, currently plays for the Edmonton Oilers. And he’s been doing a bang-up job since being cleared to play in the playoffs.

On Tuesday night, the Oilers opened their series against the Vegas Golden Knights with a decisive 4-2 victory over the winner of the Pacific Division.

This was in no small part due to the performance of Klingberg. According to their head coach Kris Knoblauch, he was directly involved in the play that turned the tide for the team.

“Probably the turning point…is after we score that goal,” Knoblauch said to the media on hand in Vegas. “I think John makes a great play (to) break that puck out.”

That break out pass went to Leon Draisaitl, then Connor McDavid, and then Corey Perry who made no mistake putting it past the Golden Knights netminder, Adin Hill.

Klingberg didn’t get rewarded with an assist, but his play directly led to the goal. He’s been doing that all playoffs long to the pleasant surprise of Knoblauch.

“He’s been a number one defenseman for many years in this league,” Knoblauch explained. “We knew we could get some good things out of him, not necessarily at the level he’s playing right now.”

“Because he’s been helping our team quite a bit since he came into our lineup for Game 2 against LA.”

His two points in six games aren’t indicative of the play he has provided his new team. However, the Oilers are 5-1 since Klingberg entered the lineup, so he is clearly doing something right.
