One name remains on the Pittsburgh Penguins wishlist this summer.

One name remains on the Pittsburgh Penguins wishlist this summer.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are a few weeks removed from one of the biggest trades in the franchise's 56-year history when they acquired defenseman Erik Karlsson.

After the trade, Penguins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas seemed set with his group heading into camp.

A few days later, multiple reports indicated that the Penguins had shown interest in veteran forward Tomas Tatar, who remains one of the league's top free agents. All have remained quiet since those initial reports, but with PTO (professional tryout) season well underway, time could be running out on Tatar to find a deal.

Any deal between Pittsburgh and Tatar would have to favor the cap-strapped Penguins. According to capfriendly.com, the Penguins are currently $79,000 over the NHL's salary cap with 22 players on the roster, including the injured Jake Guentzel.

Tatar is coming off his third 20-goal season in the last five years. He played in all 82 games for the New Jersey Devils last season, scoring 48 points and providing a strong veteran presence for the young Devils squad.

His role in Pittsburgh would likely be as a utility middle-six winger who can jump into the top-six if needed due to injury or poor play from one of the Penguins' top wingers. While many teams are set with their rosters ahead of training camp, Tatar provides enough of an upgrade that a contract (not PTO) could still be on the table in some markets.
