Alexandar Georgiev has struggled this season, but he gets a fresh start with the San Jose Sharks, and his first start will be tonight.

Georgiev has won many games over the last two seasons, but the underlying numbers don't suggest he's played well. In 18 games this season for the Colorado Avalanche, the netminder has eight wins but holds a 3.38 GAA and a .874 save percentage.

Questions about Georgiev's ability swelled during the 23-24 season. Last season, Georgiev had 38 wins but a .897 save percentage. In 22-23, Georgiev set career highs in wins with 40 and save percentage with a .919.

"It just gives us a little, maybe a little bit more time for Asky to play down there and keep building on what he's doing down there. For Georgie, I had him in New York. He's a playoff-tested guy. He's won a lot of games in this league," San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier told NBC Sports Bay Area. "For him, it's an opportunity to maybe, he's playing better now, but maybe get his game back to where he wants it in a less pressure-filled environment. We'll kind of see what happens during the next couple months after that."

Sharks goalie coach Thomas Speer is arguably the best up-and-coming goalie savant in the NHL. He's rekindled the career of Mackenzie Blackwood, and former San Jose Sharks goalie Devin Cooley said Speer "revolutionized" his game. Cooley is 14-3 in the AHL with the Calgary Wranglers with a .942 save percentage and a 1.80 GAA.

Georgiev will need time to adjust to the Sharks' defensive system, but based on Speer's track record, he might have found the solution to bringing his game back to a high level.
