To avoid losing his rights, the San Jose Sharks must sign goaltending prospect Mason Beaupit to a contract before tonight's 5 p.m. ET deadline.
Beaupit was a fourth-round pick in 2022 and hasn't been able to put it together. The 6'5 netminder showed great promise but seemingly hasn't been able to put his size and athletic ability into production.
During the 2022-23 WHL season, Beaupit was dealt from the Spokane Chiefs to the Winnipeg Ice. In 22 games for the Ice, he registered a 3.08 GAA and a .892 save %.
This season went even worse for Beaupit. He was placed in the BCHL with the Langley Rivermen. The BCHL is considered "Junior A" in Canada, one step below the CHL (WHL, QMJHL, OHL).
In 28 games for the Rivermen, the goalie had a 3.10 GAA and a .904 save %.
If Beaupit and the Sharks don't come to a contractual agreement by 5 p.m. ET today, he will become an unrestricted free agent in the NHL. The Sharks have filled their goalie prospect pool in recent seasons with Georgi Romanov, Magnus Chrona, and Eetu Makiniemi. The additions of Devin Cooley and Vitek Vanecek could also mean that there isn't enough space for Beaupit in the system.
While there is still time for that to change, albeit not much, Beaupit's signing rights are about to expire, and there hasn't been any sign of that changing.
